Various oils and liquids in automobile are a big headache to some car owners, who often add engine oil into anti-freezing solution, especially so among quite some female car owners. Some also add windshield washer fluid into anti-freezing solution or vice versa by mistake, which won't cause a serious harm to the cars. But what if anti-freezing solution is added into engine oil by mistake?
This kind of situation is not common, but does happen among some female car owners. The specific situation is: the car owner wants to replenish the engine with anti-freezing solution, but adds it into the engine oil by mistake. At that moment, the car owner has not realized the mistake and drives the car away after screwing up the engine oil cover. As a result, after less than half an hour, the engine gives out an alarm, at this moment the car owner will realize the mistake and immediately drives the car to a 4S car store. The car owner feels strange why it gives out an alarm after adding anti-freezing solution into engine oil, what chemical reaction will occur? So the car owner enters the workshop to observe the car. When the oil is discharged, the car owner is shocked and wonders why engine oil is yellowish milk white. The maintenance technician finds the wonder of the car owner funny. In the end, simply for a small mistake made by the car owner, the engine has to be washed with engine oil for several times until clean.
After being added with water, engine oil will generate bubbles and appear white or a bit yellow. Normal engine oil should be semi-transparent. The phenomenon is caused by mixture of water and engine oil and mechanical agitation when the engine is running. Under normal conditions, the allowed water content in engine oil is below 0.03%. When the water content exceeds 0.1%, the additives in the engine oil (like anti-oxidation agents and purification dispersant) will fail, which will accelerate the oxidation process of engine oil. Inorganic acid is generated from the chemical reaction between water and organic acid generated by the oxidation of engine oil and acidic oxides discharged from the waste gas of the engine. These acidic substances will worsen the corrosion to the engine.
Therefore, when engine oil is mixed with relatively much water, the lubricating performance of engine oil will become worse, the viscosity of engine oil will decline, which will cause engine oil to go bad too early and parts to rust and may even give rise to a serious mechanical accident such as bearing lock and bush burning at the engine. Therefore, the car owners shall not do a test out of curiosity, otherwise it will be too late to regret.
